Meet Larry - Downing Street's New ‘Rat Catcher’

"Larry would appear to be the kind of cat we need – a killer with an urbane exterior."

David Cameron finds a job for ‘urbane killer’ in number 10. Larry, a four-year-old tabby cat, is recruited by the Prime Minister to deal with an infestation of rats at No 10.

The "ratter" was picked from a shortlist of particularly fierce residents of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home.

David Cameron, who has himself been confronted by the sight of rats in the neighborhood, expects him to hit the ground running when he starts work this week.

"We needed a cat that would deal with the rats we have without mercy, but would also know how to treat the furniture, not to mention visiting heads of state," whispers my informant.

The rodent problem in Downing Street had got so bad that sizeable rats were even being seen scuttling behind television reporters when they were reporting from outside the Prime Minister's official residence.

Dr Roger Mugford, the animal psychologist, says that he hopes Larry has experience of killing rats.

"Cats need to have been taught to kill rats by their mothers and really do need to be quit".

  1. I think they should employ more than one cat to fix the rodent problem. This will help those cats that don't have a home.
