Pet owners on guard as antifreeze blamed for poisoning cats

Pet owners in Elford are being urged to be vigilant after three cats from the area were poisoned in recent weeks.

The RSPCA has received reports received reports the cats have died in and around Croft Close and warn that antifreeze poisoning could have been the cause.

RSPCA inspector Penny Baker, who is investigating the deaths, said: “We are extremely concerned to hear that cats are needlessly becoming ill and dying due to suspected poisoning.

“Sadly, we are hearing of more and more cases of cats becoming innocent victims.

“we welcome calls from anyone who has witnessed something suspicious in these areas or who has information which may help our inquires”

The main ingredient in antifreeze – ethylene glycol – is said to taste sweet to animals, and is appealing to cats and dogs.

Ethylene glycol has an immediate and a long term affect on the body and is rapidly absorbed and metabolised once consumed. The chemical is particularly dangerous to cats because of their smaller frames.

RSPCA officers are also appealing to residents to be careful when storing or handling antifreeze to prevent any accidental deaths. Inspector baker said: “we urge people to ensure that they store antifreeze and other poisonous substances safely and securely from ground level.

“if antifreeze is spilled, we ask people to please ensure it is cleared up, as it can prove lethal to animals”

Anyone who has any information on the deaths of the cats is asked to contact the RSPCA’s national cruelty and advice line on 0300 1234 999.

  1. This is becoming an increasingly worrying occurrence, too many cats are dying from the same cause.

  5. I would just like to say ever since the first anti-freeze article, it seems that people are starting a craze. If the writers were to stop writing about these incident then, some idiotic people who may get inspired from these stories will not get any ideas. Also by reporting these stories the person who killed these cats is getting the recognition that they wanted. We should wait till they are found and prosecuted, so that anyone who thinks about doing such a cruel act knows the consequences. They way you portray them makes them seem uncatchable.

  9. I don't think that the anti-freeze is the issue here. It's the people who are using it for other purposes.

  13. I agree with emily with acts of cruelty not being published till after the suspect is caught, because potential idiots would get ideas. So its not the anti-freeze as ever car requires it to function in cold weather. Its the people and the media need to know when to publish a story!
