Once again the danger of the Toxoplasma gondii parasite appears in the media in September with the 'fact' that 1000 people a day in the UK are being infected by the parasite which can cause brain inflammation and death and lives in cats. There have been stories on this blog about the dangers and the misinformation especially from those who feel no one should own a cat at at least never touch one without wearing rubber gloves. In mitigation Professor Bill Reilly has said that infected meat is a far greater problem and a more likely source of infection. Many will remember the brain changes caused by the parasite have life changing impact in a variety of ways including a temporary enhancement of abilities in infected cats.
