Eating cats in China

In the city of Xuzhou in eastern China a lorry was pulled over and the police heard pitiful whimpers coming from under tarpaulins stretched over the back of a large lorry. On examination there were 500 cats in cages piled on top of each other. They were aimed for the restaurant market whose gourmets consider cat flesh to be a delicacy. It is perfectly legal to sell cats for meat and eat them but the police allowed cat lovers in the city to buy the cargo for £350 3,500 yuan. The cats were taken to safe havens but cats are not safe in China and remain under real threat.
