Tragedy of cats in disasters

Disasters affect everyone not just people. I was fascinated to be contacted by a USA colleague who pointed out the pet tragedy created by Superstorm Sandy. 
Imagine the numbers of cats out there who couldn't get home and were washed away or 

drowned or even hit in the home. If you have to escape a disaster do you leave the pet behind or carry it and risk your own life - difficult decisions. There are many stories of people drowning after trying to save pets.
